What is Tunisian crochet?

Tunisian crochet is a speciality technique that looks like knitting at first glance, but actually works like crocheting and that’s what makes it so exciting. You get the best of both styles with this. It only requires one crochet hook, but you also keep all the stitches on the hook, quite like knitting. This technique creates a close stitch with a naturally trim border, giving it a clean, smooth look.

How is it different from regular crochet?

Though Tunisian crochet is essentially a style of crocheting, there are a few differences that set these two styles apart. Tunisian crochet typically uses a hook that’s about 11′′ to 14′′ long, as compared to the 6′′ long traditional hook. Tunisian crochet also tends to be a lot denser and lessstretchy than traditional crochet.

Afghan crochet hooks may also come with a stopper on one end to keep the loop on the hook and prevent it from falling during the crocheting session.

What’s it used for?

This technique produces thick, durable fabrics that are especially perfect for Afghans & cold-weather blankets and also heavy-duty articles like dish towels and washcloths that you will use every day.
