Staedtler Mars® Lumograph® watercolour is a premium set of water-soluble graphite pencils that combines classic sketching with a soft watercolour effect. You can draw crisp lines and details dry – then dissolve the graphite with water to create tones, shadows and wash-like areas. The set is ideal when you want to work in greyscale with both control and a painterly look. The pencils feature an extra reinforced, break-resistant lead, so they can withstand pressure and layering. The wood comes from certified, sustainably managed forests (PEFC).

Use
Use the set for preliminary sketches for watercolour drawings, classic watercolour painting and general sketching. The three hardnesses let you build tone from mid-grey to deep dark areas without losing the feel of graphite. When you add water with the included round brush #8, you can soften edges, create smooth transitions and achieve a more fluid expression. It works well for quick studies, illustration and more detailed drawings. Suitable for both beginners and experienced artists who want to experiment with water-soluble graphite.

Tips for use
Start with 4B for light lines and details, and use 6B/8B for depth, shading and dark areas. Use a slightly damp brush for more control and a wetter brush for more distinct wash areas. It’s a good idea to do a small test on the same paper type before you begin – the paper surface affects how quickly the graphite dissolves. Work in layers: let one layer dry, then add more graphite on top for extra contrast and clearer texture.
